Macau Travel Guide

Lying just 65km west of Hong Kong but predating that territory’s colonisation by almost 300 years. Macau was the first European enclave in Asia. When China resumed sovereignty over what is now called the Special Administrative Region of Macau in 1999, it was by far the oldest.

Macau is a fascinating mix of cultures – a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian architecture, food, lifestyles and temperaments. It is a city of cobbled backstreets, baroque churches, ancient stone fortresses and exotic street names etched on azulejos, the distinctive Portuguese blue enamel tiles. There are many interesting Chinese temples and restored colonial villas, and the cemeteries of Macau are the final resting places of many European and American missionaries, painters, soldiers, and sailors who died here. You will also find many good hotels, excellent restaurants and lively casions here.

Compared to how it was 10 years ago, Macau is hard to recognise today. Hong Kong Chinese had always looked down upon Macau as a sleepy, dirty, impoverished backwater, with nothing to recommend it except legalised gambling and cheap dim sum. Before the Portuguese colonial government departed in 1999, it had spent some MOP$70 million on renovating and refurbishing civil buildings, churches, gardens and public squares; the place is now a colourful palette of pastels and ordered greenery. At the same time, the post-handover government has spent a fortune on ambitious infrastructural projects and tourist facilities in a bid to claim the title ‘recreational centre of the Pearl River delta’.

Getting to Macau from Hong Kong has never been easier, with high-speed ferries now running between the two territories virtually every 15 minutes. Go to Macau and stay a night or even two, and you’ll discover something pretty, old, curious or tasty around every corner.
