Conclusion of the 107th session of Canton Fair
The 107th session of Canton Fair was concluded on May 5th.
According to the spokesman, Mr. Chen Chaoren, Deputy Secretary General of the Canton Fair, the 107th Canton Fair was held successfully with growth rebound in both overseas buyers attendance and export turnover which yet to reach the previous level before crisis. As of May 4, 203996 overseas buyers from 212 countries and regions around the world attended the Fair, 15827 more than that of last Autumn Fair, representing an increase of 8.4% and a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%. The total export turnover stood at USD 34.30 billion, increased by 12.6 % over last Autumn Fair while decreased by 10.30% year on year.
The 107th Canton Fair caught great attention from all walks of life. From the external situation, the world economy begins to show signs of recovery, but the recovery foundation remains fragile. There are still some uncertainties affecting our exports such as financial risks re-spreading across Europe, exacerbated fluctuation of commodity price and exchange rate, as well as the rising trade protectionism. Despite of all difficulties facing us, under the direct leadership of MOFCOM and with great support and coordination of relevant departments of Guangdong province and Guangzhou municipality as well as concerted efforts by trading delegations, chambers of commerce at provincial and municipal levels and our staff , the Fair of this session did pretty well and operated smoothly, which contributed to growth rebound both in overseas buyer attendance and export turnover and succeed in accomplishing the main task of “making every effort to secure safety and transaction of the Fair” proposed by MOFCOM. This gives a strong boost for consolidating the turnaround in our export and achieving the goal of “expanding the market, adjusting the structure and promoting the balance” of this year’s foreign trade.
The attendance of overseas buyers of this session saw increase in general whereas those from the traditional markets are yet to be satisfied. 203996 overseas buyers from 212 countries and regions around the world attended the Fair, 8.4% up than last Autumn Fair. By country and region account based on this figure, 15.2% and 4.6% down from EU and Japan respectively while 3.8% up from the US. Significant increase was seen in emerging markets while growth maintained in Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania, among which Oceania registered the largest increase with 6921, representing an increase of 23.6%, and followed by the Americas, Africa and Asia with 29206, 16189 and 117925 respectively, representing increases of 17.8%, 17.7% and 10.5 %.
The top 3 countries and regions in this regard were Hong Kong SAR, USA, Taiwan Province, whose figures reached 27821, 11274, 9249 respectively. 132735 regular buyers attended the Fair, accounting for 65.1% of the total and representing an increase of 8.2% than that of last Autumn Fair. And 71261 new buyers attended this session, accounting for 34.9% of the total overseas buyers and increased by 8.7% over last Autumn Fair.
In terms of turnover, machinery and electronic products, light industry products and textiles and garments are on the top 3, accounting for 46.9%, 29% and 11% respectively. The major transactions covered household electrical appliances, hardware, garments and accessories, textiles, construction and decoration materials etc.
It is marked that this session saw innovation of exhibits as a mainstream, and our exporting business took the initiative to adopt industrial transformation and upgrading. The percentage of new products exceeded 40% with a higher quoted price of 20% than that of traditional products. And the low-carbon and environmental-friendly products became the spotlight. Those enterprises with industrial bases and long industrial chains demonstrate the relatively strong capabilities to offset cost and fend off risks. The turnover in Brand Zone of this session stood at USD 10.60 billion, up by 6.1% over last Autumn Fair, accounting for 30.9% of the total.
Turnover of online transaction was active. Visits to the Canton Fair’s official website accumulated to 120.24 million times, increased by 3%. The intended turnover of online transaction reached USD 45.81 million, increased by 9.9%.
Due to the unconsolidated foundation of world economic recovery and uncertainties in export performance, the whole situation is far more complicated than we expected. With combination of worries in policy changes, rise of cost and exacerbated trade protectionism, a number of export companies are cautious to take long-term and big-value orders. And the three-month short-term contracts account for 53% of the total.
